Once Upon a Star

Beth Cato

Poetry
Science Fiction

it is a mighty burden to be wished upon;
over the millennium, the expectations pile
dead dreams, idle fancies, desperate desires
they cling like shaven metal to a magnet
crushing, suffocating
the star itself has but one wish: to shine
but it cannot, for it has become more than a star
it is hope and longing, a sparkling
distant echo of God
in time each star learns to tamper its glow
to hesitate, avoid being the first to glimmer
in that far-off terrestrial sky
yet some star must always be first and accept
that onerous burden of wishes
all the while yearning to but shine in peace
