His owner lies alone
a candle burning by her bed
eyes closed as warm winds whisper
through the shaded glass
longing to see beyond the veil of
life and death knowing
one day she'll fly away
into the multi-colored twilight.

His box of ashes safe inside
her dead aunt's curio, butterflies
on pillows, doors and walls -
tokens of scattered promises
of forever in dreams,
a defense against the shadows,
footsteps coming up the stairs.
