Pluto’s Defense

John Nichols

Poetry
Science Fiction

It’s dark, my only company is
        Charon, who keeps his distance.
        Winter brings methane showers—
it’s not just distance that keep

        Nix and Hydra away.  Sometimes
I come closer but you would rather
spend time with Neptune than ever
think of me.  When you do, you

argue about what I am, as if it
        matters what you decide.  Don’t
you know your history?  I am
a god.  I will be what I will be.
