There was a mermaid in the sand

but no one else seemed to notice. . .

what with that perfect posture and
lovely tail tucked beneath a supple
derriere, her fingers relaxed and circling
through small ripples of water, amid
laughing children with boogie boards,
mounds of scattered seaweed and kelp.

Yes, there was a Mermaid in the sand,
but no one seemed to notice, what with
pelicans diving, then surfacing with bits
of jelly fish and lobster, an occasional
squirming fish.

And so that Mermaid in the sand
that no one seemed to notice remained
undisturbed just beyond my towel,
laughing softly as she trailed her
fingers languidly through sunlit waters,
chatting on her cell phone until the sun
finally set, until she swam into the swells
still unnoticed amid the oohs-and-ahhs
of the legendary green flash at sunset.
