Submission Guidelines

Last Update: 7/10/10

MindFlights publishes science fiction and fantasy (including all its sub-genres). All submissions to MindFlights must have a SF&F element.

MindFlights is a family-friendly, Christian-friendly market. Thus we prefer stories without excessive or explicit profanity, sexual content, etc.

***********************
PLEASE NOTE:

MindFlights is OPEN to submissions.
***********************

Please read this guidelines page, especially the one recent change below. Thank you.

Recent change:

We are again taking submissions via our online tool.

Please feel free to contact us at MindFlightsEditors@gmail.com if you have any questions or problems using the tool.

No simultaneous submissions. We do not want to see any submissions that are currently under consideration at another market.

Multiple submissions are okay, but please submit each work separately and do not submit more than three works at a time.

We will consider reprints but strongly prefer previously unpublished works. We rarely accept reprints, and then only if they are exceptional in both quality and fit. Please note that if a work is publicly available on the Internet, it is considered previously published.

Payment is 1/2 cent per word with a minimum of $5 and a maximum of $25. We only pay via PayPal. We can no longer pay by check.

We have no word length requirements. However, we prefer submissions under 5000 words. Submissions over 7000 words are considered VERY long. Longer stories must be of exceptional quality. We do not consider novel-length works.

We only want stand-alone stories, not submissions that are excerpts of larger works.

Our response time is usually about 3-4 weeks.

Current Needs

Currently we are especially interested in receiving more cover art and poetry.

Formatting Guidelines for Fiction

For fiction, we treat submissions differently based on word length because we treat them differently in publication. Refer to the appropriate section below for fiction formatting guidelines.

Guidelines

Be sure to read the Global Information and Content Guidelines before deciding to submit.

Payment

MindFlights pays 1/2 cent (US) per word with a minimum of $5.00 and a maximum of $25.00. Authors whose works appear in the print version will also receive one contributor copy.

Reprints

As stated, we prefer original works, but exceptional reprints will be considered. The author must be sure they have the right to sell reprints.

Formatting

Our preferred formatting varies depending on the length of the work.  Please consider the following guidelines carefully.

Format (Short Fiction Under 2000 Words)

Submission of these types of works are done completely through the web tool. You will not upload any files, as the submission will be entirely sent through the form. For fiction under 2000 words, please do not indent paragraphs and please do put a blank line between paragraphs.

The instructions are detailed. You will be asked to classify your submission (Fiction, Review, Essay, etc.; Romance, Fantasy, Science Fiction, etc.), then provide title and other information. We ask that you provide a present tense blurb that will appear in the contents to entice website visitors to read your work. Next, you will be asked to enter your submission in full into the next box (some formatting instructions are given). Lastly, you can enter your "cover letter" before saving and previewing.

When you save/preview, your submission will be presented for your inspection and in the middle of the page you will find a button that says "Approve Submission and Notify Editors." You may click that button to finalize your submission or scroll further down to make additional changes and repeat the save/preview process.

Once you approve your submission, the editorial team is notified that a new submission has been received. Your submission will then appear in a list in your Author-Artist Tools.

Format (Long Fiction Over 2000 Words)

As an online publication, we recognize that most Internet readers are attracted to shorter works. Nevertheless, while we strongly prefer works under 5000 words, we do not have a word limit on submissions—thus, there is no need to query on the basis of word count. When works over 5000 words are received, we will (after bracing ourselves) hold the work to our highest standard. If after the first 1500-2000 words, the submission has not gripped us, inspired us, and if it is not compelling us to read on, we (as we perceive our readers would do) will cease reading, then reply with our decision. (Please note that we do not want to see novel-length works.)

For fiction over 2000 words, except as noted below, manuscripts should be in standard format--Double space your manuscript and indent your paragraphs; no blank line between paragraphs; mark section breaks, etc. Font? Nothing really crazy. Courier 12 pt. is standard, and is fine. We will change the font before we create the final files for the site.

Standard Manuscript Format Exceptions

  • Format your contribution as you would like to see it in print. If you want something in italics, put it in italics. If you want something to appear in bold, put it in bold.

  • Use the em dash properly. You may use the em dash character or two hyphens. Our style conforms to Chicago Manual of Style, which calls for NO spaces before or after the em dash--just type the last word of the first section, two hyphens, and the next word.

  • Please use EITHER first-line indent OR tabs, but not both. Do not mix the two.

  • If your word processor does not support "headers" do NOT use a running header. Word® supports headers and footers. Do NOT manually insert running headers. This obfuscates the process of setting the manuscript up for final publication.

For Reprints -- if your work is a reprint, AT THE END of the work, include any necessary (i.e. required by previous contract) reprint information, such as "First Appeared in XYZ, May 2004." We only care about this if you are required to include it by previous agreement. We DO care if it IS a reprint.

When you are done, save it. (Perhaps you want to “save as” and preserve your original manuscript.)

One more step....

Save in RTF (Rich Text Format). If you use Word®, it will not change the way it looks, but the coding “under the hood” will be different.

We only accept text submissions for Long Fiction in RTF format.

Content Guidelines

MindFlights is a magazine meant to enlighten and entertain. Using these two ideas, our main criterion for acceptance is simple:

1. Did we enjoy it? Was it interesting? Does it evoke our emotions or make us think?
2. Was it compatible with our values and principles?

However, we especially like works that, besides entertaining, illustrate some point or raise some question about life. Articles and other exposition should be relevant to fans of fantasy and science fiction.

MindFlights is a family friendly market. Sexual content, profanity, and other elements that would be considered offensive to the general Christian community are unlikely to be published at MindFlights. If such content is integral to the story, it must be handled with great care in order to be accepted by MindFlights.

For tips on how you might handle controversial content, Click Here.

All work must be original. That means original characters in original settings. No "fan fiction" accepted.

All submissions should be in English and follow standard grammar rules. Artistic departure from standard rules should be minimal. If grammar problems, intentional or otherwise, detract from the enjoyment of the contribution, then it will be rejected. Double space your manuscript and indent your paragraphs.

Remember you are writing for fans. MindFlights is not a "writer's magazine."

You should also want to check out our Editorial Preferences section for a better idea of what we like and dislike.

Illustrations and Cartoons

We are looking for cover illustrations as well as occasional illustrations for stories. The principles of our content guidelines apply to image art as well.

Cover Art

In its final form, your creation needs to be 6 inch X 9 inch 300 dpi JPEG or PhotoShop file (1800 X 2700 pixels).

HOWEVER, do NOT send such a file in as your submission! Submissions MUST be in JPG format and sized 333 X 500 pixels.

Please state in your cover letter that you are submitting for consideration as cover art.

Illustrations

We buy illustrations for selected stories and poems. Submissions should clearly indicate which work they are meant to illustrate and submitted as a JPEG approximately no larger than 500 pixels wide or tall. Final images need to be usable within a 5 inch by 8 inch page layout.

Cartoons

We prefer JPEG files no wider than 600 px. If possible, a 450 px cartoon is better, as it can appear on the main contents page. Of course content should be suitable for a fantasy and science fiction publication and should adhere to our content standards.

Payment (Covers and Illustrations)

Illustrations and Cartoons used in MindFlights will be compensated with a modest "thank you" payment of $10.00. We realize this is a token payment and hope to be able to pay more as funds become available. Artists whose works appear in the print version will also receive one contributor copy.

Reprints

As stated above, we prefer original works, but exceptional reprints will be considered. The author must be sure they have the right to sell reprints.

Inspirational, Editorial, and Articles

Your contribution in these areas should be guided by our adherence to traditional values and Christian principles. However, we are NOT looking for preachy, judging, Sunday school items. Be uplifting, encouraging, and provide something that is interesting to our audience—fans of fantasy and science fiction who are comfortable in an environment committed to a Christian world view.

Articles

We are looking for articles that fans of fantasy and science fiction would find interesting. Without attempting to provide a comprehensive list, some ideas might be articles on technology, gadgets, science discoveries, origins of ancient myths and legends... Remember the audience and write to them.

Inspirational Essays

We believe that inspirational essays need not be dogmatic. We are not interested in works proving or disproving controversial idioms of theology. Inspirational essays should uplift and encourage all readers. They should not tear down any group or religion. This category of contribution might garner submission of items circulated via e-mail. DO NOT submit articles unless YOU are the author.

Editorials

Editorials are expected to relate to topics of interest to our targeted audience. Editorials bashing government leaders will be less likely to be accepted than those rendering opinions of converting books into movies (for example).

Length

Most works of this type will appear online, and as such should be crafted to the tastes of web consumers. That means shorter more than longer. Internet users want works that keep them entertained, or that give them fast, easy access to information that is important to them. Be sure your work moves fast!

Payment

MindFlights pays 1/2 cent (US) per word with a minimum of $5.00 and a maximum of $25.00. Authors whose works appear in the print version will also receive one contributor copy.

Reprints

Submitting Poetry

MindFlights accepts all forms of poem – structured or free, long or short – and we publish both established names and first-time poets. We particularly encourage student contributors.

Our main criteria for acceptance are simple:
1. Did we enjoy it? Was it interesting?
2. Was it compatible with our values and principles?
3. Does it evoke our emotions or make us think?

What We Are Looking For

Almost all of the poems we publish are speculative in nature, be that science fiction or fantasy. However, we do publish the occasional science poem. We are open to all poets, regardless of experience. We are open to all styles, forms, and lengths of poetry, from free verse to villanelles, from haiku to skaldic epics. We do ask that if you choose to write to a specific form, you make sure that the form suits and adds to the content of the poem. We also note that, while well written formal poetry can be wonderful, there are few things worse than poorly written rhyming poems.

We also keep an open submission policy without specific reading periods. We don't have a long list of topics we like or don't like; just entertain us and be sure to stay within our content guidelines.

If you are thinking about sending us something seasonal, please send it at least two months before you'd expect it to be published.

Payment and Rights Purchased

We are asking for rights as follows:

  • Non-exclusive Electronic Publication Rights, for publication in the English language. (Internet format)
  • Non-exclusive Print Publication Rights, for publication in the English language. (Print format)

MindFlights pays 1/2 cent (US) per word with a minimum of $5.00 and a maximum of $25.00. For nearly all poems, this means a $5.00 payment. Authors whose works appear in the print version will also receive one contributor copy.

Reprints

We do occasionally accept reprints, but only if (a) we think they are excellent, (b) you tell us where they were previously published, and (c) you have retained the right to sell reprints.

A poem counts as a reprint if it has been previously published on general release anywhere in the world or electronically, including on personal blogs and discussion boards. Posts to members-only critique groups or in limited-distribution workshop collections do not count as reprints. If you are in any doubt whether your poem counts as a reprint, please just send it to us with a brief explanation and we'll take it from there.

Multiple Submissions

We do accept multiple submissions, but please don't send us more than three poems at once. Please submit each poem, one at a time. You will title your submission, and if accepted, that title will be displayed to readers as entered. Therefore, each poem needs to be titled individually, and the best way to do that is for each poem to be submitted individually.

Formatting Guidelines

Submission at MindFlights are done completely through the web tool. For poetry, you will not upload any files, as the submission will be entirely sent through the form. The instructions are detailed. You will be asked to classify your submission (as Poetry and into a genre), then provide title and other information. We ask that you provide a present tense blurb that will appear in the contents to entice website visitors to read your work (this might be edited for various reasons if the piece is accepted).

In all, if your poem is open in a word processing document, you can submit it in about two or three minutes. It REALLY is easy.

What Happens Next?

Once you've sent us your poem, it is sent to our team of editors for their consideration. We'll then get back to you with a decision as soon as we can, often within two to three weeks.

If we like your poem and want to publish it, we'll let you know by e-mail.

If we decide not to publish your poem, we will always tell you why in the form of an edited version of our editors' comments. These comments are intended to be helpful rather than critical, and we see this an integral part of our aim to help develop new talent. If you'd rather not receive this feedback, please let us know in your cover letter.

If we like your poem, but don't think it is appropriate for MindFlights , we may refer you to one of our sister magazines: TeenAge, Fear and Trembling, Haruah, and Ray Gun Revival.

Thanks for reading. If you'd like to submit a poem to us, please click the button below to enter our submissions process.

Submission Process -- ALL Submissions

No simultaneous submissions. If we accept your submission, we expect to be able to publish it. If you have submitted to more than one publication and are accepted in more than one place, then what? If you have submitted elsewhere, wait for a response before submitting here.

We obtain:

  • Non-exclusive Electronic Publication Rights, for publication in the English language. (Internet format)
  • Non-exclusive Print Publication Rights, for publication in the English language. (Print format)

Rights may be requested in any one or any combination of the above ways.

Editorial Process

A pool of editors will review your submissions. Most likely, you will get some remarks about your manuscript in an e-mail, if declined. We do not promise to read the whole thing. For example, if the grammar is prohibitively flawed, we might just remark on a couple of paragraphs and send it to you by e-mail. We will note clearly if we want you to revise and resubmit.

Liking something is in the eye of the beholder, so just because we don't like it, does not mean it is bad!

It is our practice to provide editors’ comments with a decline or revision request, in the hopes that the feedback will be helpful to the author.  If you would prefer not to receive any feedback beyond a simple yes or no, please indicate that in your cover letter.

Over the years at SR and DKA, our response times typically ran about 3-4 weeks.  If you don’t hear from us after a month, feel free to email (editor@mindflights.com) to check the status of your submission.

Publication Process

MindFlights Internet magazine features rolling content. About twice a week, a new work is added to the contents and the oldest feature rotates off. The print version becomes available mid-month of each issue, and can be purchased through our printing and distribution vender. (Authors and illustrators receive one free contributor copy.)

Submissions will generally be in the contents from between four to six weeks. Once submissions have rotated out of contents, they become part of our archives. The archives will be a searchable list of all works that have appeared in MindFlights . Authors may request that works be removed from archives by contacting the editor.

Submitting

We accept ONLY on-line submissions. The process is fairly easy:

  1. You will be required to provide and confirm a valid e-mail address.
  2. You will set up a submission tool password to protect your submission account.
  3. You can reach the submission tools by clicking here or using the link below.

Reviews

We are looking for reviews of books, movies, and other things that would be interesting to fans of fantasy and science fiction.

Reviews should include comments about rating (MA, PG-13, Teen, etc.) and your estimate of appropriateness of the rating.

Book reviews should include ISBN number in your cover letter.

We are more interested in promoting good works than bashing bad ones. Keep this in mind as you decide what to submit. We urge you to find things you like and promote them.

Length

Most works of this type will appear online, and as such should be crafted to the tastes of web consumers. That means shorter more than longer. Remember readers on the Internet have one finger on the "back" button.

Payment

MindFlights pays 1/2 cent (US) per word with a minimum of $5.00 and a maximum of $25.00. Authors whose works appear in the print version will also receive one contributor copy.

Vision

All flights have a destination. Mindflights' journeys are speculative—science fiction, fantasy—and our ultimate destination is truth.

We believe some truths are universal. Some truths are there for all persons to find through observation and pondering, with inquiry or with introspection, with stillness or with debate. Other truths must be sought, hunted, and they are more difficult to capture. Both can inspire stories and poems.

Here at MindFlights, many of us believe the ultimate truth resides in the person of Jesus Christ, who as Savior embraces us with eternal life, and as Lord asks that we give ourselves over to service, to love, to purity, and to a greater purpose. Our faith is a thing that asks us to fly beyond earth and take others with us as we journey upwards. As such, we will actively seek and happily offer stories and poems that display this world view, whether overtly or subtly or someplace in between.

But we are not isolationists. We don't bar the door to the skeptic, or the seeker who hasn't found, or the one who has an allegiance to a different set of doctrines. Our faith says the door should be open for all who want to befriend us. Hospitality is an early and enduring virtue in Christendom. Therefore, we want to offer broader visions of truth. While contributors need not be Christian, familiarity with compatible values will increase the likelihood that your submission will fit.

We do not shy away from obviously Christian or moral themes, ideas, or language. We do not, however, want to be preached at. We don't seek to publish works that appear to function mainly as a Sunday School lesson or modified sermon. We are not averse to Bible verses and gospel imagery in stories, but by no means do we expect every story to include such. We are put off by the beating drum of a moral point that drowns out the beauty and artistry of a work. Telling a great story well and effectively developing a strong theme that is congruent with Christian principles and traditional values is the best assurance of earning the editors' approval.

Our stargazing, soulskimming vessels here at MindFlights have room for those who do not hold to Christian doctrines. As long as what is submitted to us doesn't offend or mock or contradict Christian principles, we will happily consider your artistic visions. You don't have to mention God or Christ or the Bible. We believe all truth speaks of God silently, and that suffices to light a candle in the dark.

What we want to offer is a space where both those who call themselves Christians and those who do not can journey to new worlds grounded in shared ideals. We believe there is a better way for humans to interact, to care, to nurture, to live, to build communities, to resist foes, and to create great things. We don't ask you to share our religion; we merely ask that you respect it.

We are ecumenical in nature, and though grounded in Christian principles and traditional values, we do not set out to promote the practices or beliefs of any particular denomination. Within our pages, readers will find, besides works with specific Christian content, works that honor the values and tenets of a wide variety of faith traditions.

Whether you are of the faith or not, we invite you to share our excitement at exploring new speculative worlds while holding up common truths.

What common truths?

It is better to hope than despair.
It is better to build than destroy.
It is better to love than to hate.
It is better to care than to be indifferent.
It is better to share than to hoard.
It is better to illuminate than to darken.
It is better to honor life than to exploit it.
It is better to raise someone's head than knock it down.
It is better to dream and grow than to lie vacant and enervated.
It is better to strive than to wallow.
It is better to heal than harm.
It is better to try to understand than to hold onto prejudices.
It is better to add joy to the cosmos than to add lamentations.
It is better to be faithful and honest than to be disloyal and false.
It is better to look up and search our hearts and souls and the universe for answers and for meaning and for what endures, than to be satisfied with what is fleeting and pointless, because we are more than molecules. We are dreamers of astounding dreams.

If you yearn for something finer and higher and deeper and full of awe, then we hope your minds can come and soar with ours.

We aim to be a light in the darkness, a speculative city of faith on an internet hill, offering stories and poems that speak to your spirit and thrill your mind and dance into your heart. We want God to be pleased with everything we do and all that we publish. And we yearn for your prayers and support, spiritual and material. Come, engage in discussion with us. Create wonder with us.
